Case Study
A Large Walnut Plant is Greatly Reducing FM and Defects
The Challenge
The presence of walnut shell and membrane pieces among kernels, combined with color-based kernel quality, results in a higher defect ratio during processing compared to other tree nuts. This means increased runs through the sorter to find these hard to see defects.
The Solution
The Borde Inspect Solution is effectively used to identify all FMs such as fins, shells, butterballs, rocks, allergens such as almonds, and provide kernel color information - extra light, light, light amber, & amber - by count and percentage, as well as kernel size. The addition of high resolution cameras along with the learning algorithm can enhance current protocols to better detect a higher volume of FM and defects.
The Benefits
- Significantly reduced waste and improved efficiency
- Increased confidence in their walnut grading
- Increased revenue through improved bin forecasting
